Top 5 - Alternative Christmas jobs

Top 5 - Alternative Christmas jobs by Michael Cheary Its beginning to look a lot like ChristmasFor most of us, Christmas is a time to eat, drink and be merry, recharge our batteries, and get ready for another year in the working world. However, for some, the Christmas period is one or two days off in an especially hectic week.If you do have to work over Christmas, you dont have to be a Scrooge about it. To help you embrace the season, heres our light-hearted look at the top five festive jobs (look away now Ebenezer).5. Sprout pickerLove them or loathe them, Brussels sprouts are the quintessential Christmas vegetable, arguably as much a part of the traditional festive fare as the stuffing and the turkey. And, despite the bad press, it seems we cant get enough of them, with a whopping 50 million spent every year in the UK on this oft vilified veg. The Christmas season accounts for over a quarter of all sales, with growers producing somewhere in the region of 250 million sprouts in the UK alone.Come cold, rain, wi nd or shine (dont expect much of that), this process would prove impossible were it not for the humble sprout picker. So, as you gently push them to the side of your plate, spare a thought for how they got there.Bon appetite4. Professional present wrapperWhen youre trying to impress that special someone, the right gift can speak volumes. However, even the most loving gift can be ruined by some shoddy presentation. If your wrapping skills arent up to scratch or time is of the essence, dont get your tinsel in a tangle. There are people you can pay to make it look pretty.Professional present wrappers are talented and creative individuals with the gift of the gift-wrap. Although sadly, demand is exclusively seasonal.3. Christmas cracker joke writerSince being introduced in the nineteenth century, crackers have been an integral part of Christmas celebrations for over 150 years. Unfortunately, many of the jokes they contain have been around for nearly as long.Luckily, traditional classics such as Whats brown and sticky? and What do you call a one-eyed reindeer? have (finally) begun to lose their appeal, and a new wave of jokes are on the rise.So now accompanying such festive favourites as the padlock set, the pencil sharpener and the plastic bendy fish, expect a whole host of hilarious alternative anecdotes.Well leave you with this:Two snowmen in a field, one turns to the other and says, Can you smell carrots?Whats green and goes up and down? A Gooseberry in a liftGot my wife a wooden leg for Christmas. Not her main present, its just a stocking-filler.2. ElfIf youre good with children, look great in green and have a preference for pointy shoes, then this career may be perfect for you. Essentially, youll be crowd control for Santa Claus, keeping up morale while ushering in the next wide-eyed child to see the big man in red.And with the eponymous movie quickly becoming a modern day classic, the position has become particularly revered of late, with the admiration of ki ds up and down the land just one of many perks. Not to mention as many complimentary candy canes as you can eat.Excellent opportunities for career progression, as long as you have a beard.1. Father ChristmasUnquestionably the number one position for the holiday period. Whether you work in a top department store in the city or a garden centre in Guildford, there can be few jobs more rewarding. Not only do you get to bring joy to hundreds of children and keep the magic of Christmas alive, but you get to do all of this while sitting down. The hours may be long, and inquisitive children may be frustrating (especially the cynical ones), but the results are well worth it. Traditional duties will include making a list, checking it twice and finding out who is naughty or nice.(Shaking your belly like a big bowl of jelly optional).Honourable mentions: Turkey farmer, Christmas party DJ, Postman, Noel EdmondsFind a job What Where Search JobsSign up for more Career AdviceSign up for moreCaree r Advice Please enter a valid email addressmessage hereBy clicking Submit you agree to the terms and conditions applicable to our service and acknowledge that your personal data will be used in accordance with our privacy policy and you will receive emails and communications about jobs and career related topics. 3 Reasons a To-Done List Can Change Your Whole Perspective -

3 Reasons a To-Done List Can Change Your Whole Perspective - Raise your hand if you ever ended the day wishing that you had gotten more done! We’re all raising our hands, right? If we’re being real here, there is an impossible amount of things to get done in a day. In addition to pouring ourselves into our careers, we try to stay fit, spend time with family and friends, try to be good citizens of the world, meditate, exercise, eat well, keep a clean house, and maybe even have hobbies or a side hustle. And if you’re anything like me, to keep track of it all you might have a To Do list that somehow never gets any shorter no matter how hard you push. So how can we ever feel like we’ve done enough? Please meet: the To Done list. What is a To Done list? It’s a list of all of the things that you did accomplish. It can be done at the end of a day, a week, or even a month or a yearâ€"and is a wonderful way to flip the script on that gnawing feeling of not crossing enough things off of our To Do list. When you make a To Done list, be as specific and detailed as possible. There is no need to list just the things you crossed off of your To Do list (although that can be a good place to start.) Walk through your day hour by hour, or pull up your calendar for a longer period of time, and really thing through everything you have gotten done. Think broadly, list everything out, even the small things, and spend some time taking it all in. Here are three reasons why this practice works: It offers an immediate mindset shift When we grab a blank piece of paper and start writing down what we’ve done in a day (or longer), we move from focusing on what’s left undone, to starting to notice and even to celebrate what we have ticked off the list. What’s more, you will start to notice the incredible amount of things you do in a day that weren’t on any list to begin with: things like helping a co-worker work through a thorny problem, reading relevant articles that spark ideas, or doing your after-work errands. If you open your heart to a full inventory of what you have accomplished in a day, it’s quite likely that you will surprise even yourself with the sheer amount that you were able to fit in. It can help us claim our time back We might find ourselves asking, “Where did the time go?”â€"â€"and a To Done list can answer the question for us with great clarity. Perhaps we will see that we spent our time in alignment with our own values and priorities, in which case we can rest assured that we are on the right track. But, if we notice that a lot of the things we did do were not ways in which we would like to spend our time, then we are offered a clear picture with which to make future decisions on how we spend out days. If we spent a lot of time listening to a chatty colleague, for instance, when we wished we had been working on our own projects, then maybe a pair of headphones or a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door might be in order. A To Done list can be a great clarifier. It can open us up to gratitude When you’re done making the list, don’t just toss it. Re-read it, let it sink in, and take a moment to really appreciate everything that is on it. You’re doing better than you think! Taking the time to look at precisely the things you have already accomplished can show you just how amazing you really are. There will alwaysâ€"always!â€"be more left to get done, but by taking a few moments to connect with what we put out into the world can give us a more clear picture of the reality of our lives. And the reality is that you are doing pretty spectacular things. When we really ruminate on all the things we make happen in a dayâ€"from smaller things like remembering to wear sunblock or making a healthy lunch choice, to big ones such as delivering a project on-timeâ€"we can actually be grateful for our own abilities. A To Done list is a simple but powerful   practice that you can do any time that you might need a reminder of just how fantastic you really are. What to do if you think youre getting fired

What to do if you think youre getting fired First of all, here is a photo of rhubarb cobbler. And this is my food blog post for all of yeterdays commenters who think I would not be a good food blogger. You will love this post: its about what to do if you think youre about to be fired. 1. Be really interesting. And fun. Its a lethal combination. This photo looks disgusting, because that is the truth about food. Most of it looks disgusting. Even stuff that tastes good looks disgusting in a photo. Its like sex. If you have a cinematographer and three lighting guys and a foley artist who comes in at the end, then the sex looks great. But if you take a picture of yourself having sex, forget it. You look like gross, retarded animals. So even good food looks disgusting. But this photo is not actually an example of that, because this rhubarb cobbler tasted disgusting as well. Too much flour, I think. Although Melissa kept saying it had too much butter. Maybe too much flour and butter and it needed more rhubarb. The thing is that Melissa made the rhubarb cobbler. She has cooked exactly three times in the five weeks or so she has lived here. But I liked that she cooked. Cooking is so nice. Its just a generous and vulnerable thing to do for the person who is eating. So I didnt care if she did a good job or not. I just liked that she tried. This reminds me of the research about how people who are incompetent but likable almost never get fired. I mean, Melissa refuses to work on my goat cheese startup, and she seems to have lost my books in China (please, do not ask in the comments when my book is coming. Its coming) and she spends so much time obsessed with Cullen that its like she has only half a brain when shes with me, but still, I like her so much. So I accept her rhubarb cobbler as an adequate attempt at doing valuable work. 2. Dont worry about who gets credit and who gets blamed. Its boorish to care. We have tons of rhubarb in the garden, left from the people who owned the house before the farmer. The rhubarb is huge and all last year, while the farmer and I were fighting about that I could not get the bathroom tile installed so we were bathing by running up and down the Slip n Slide Double Wave Rider, all last year people would come to the farm and say how could I let the rhubarb go unused. It is such good rhubarb. So this year Ive been diligent about pulling off flowers before they flower so the rhubarb lasts, and I give handfuls of it to everyone who comes by, because in the country everyone knows how to make rhubarb pie. I made rhubarb pie. I said, Melissa. Take a picture of my pie. I need a picture. She said, No. Youll write that my rhubarb cobbler sucked and your pie was great. No, I wont. Yes you will. Just take the picture. I saw her spending a lot of time on the picture. I had high hopes. Heres what she took: The pie was good. But, honestly, I sort of cheated. I got a crust from Trader Joes. I love this brand. And it comes in pieces so its hard to put together and I get to squeeze the edges so my finger prints are on the pie and I think people like that. Also, I mess around with the insides. Rhubarb is a flexible pie inside. I just need some sugary sticky stuff inside. So I put pie filling sometimes. Like, the paste of the canned blueberry filling, or strawberry applesauce. I buy the Whole Foods kind because expensive ingredients make you look like a good cook. (Remember this when I charge you and arm and a leg for humane goat cheese.) Is it cheating, though, that people give me credit for being a good cook? I dont hide that Im taking ingredients that are not from scratch. But really, dont tell me you make your pies from scratch. Do you harvest the wheat? I do. Well, Im going to bale hay this summer. So its sort of harvesting wheat. But I dont get credit for scratch, so neither do you. And the thing is that people just want nice stuff. Good food, good conversation, interestingness in pie fillings. They dont care who gets creditTrader Joes, Whole Foods, whatever. People who stress the most about who gets credit and who deserves it are a bore, and they end up getting no credit because they end up getting fired. So I say nothing about the pie. I do not fret about whether I should get credit or not, thanking the Farmer when he is effusive about each randomly mixed rhubarb non-recipe for pie I make. Well, I do fret, but I tell myself not to. Its so easy for me not to care about this stuff at work, and so much harder when it comes to food. But I think its just because Im new to cooking. 3. Prepare a speech. I had to go to Madison to get food for dinner. We go there for cello. Who drives four hours round trip for a cello lesson for a five-year-old? Only a farm family, I think. Or an insane overachieving Westchester family, maybe. Both family types are insanely protective of the lifestyle they are determined to have. On the way home, my neighbor Kathy called to see why I wasnt at home when she walked over to say hi. I tell her to waitto just walk in and open a bottle of wine and well be there soon. Kathy is upset because she thinks shes getting fired tomorrow. Melissa and I ask her, Why do you care? Weve been fired a million times. Kathy tells us its different in a small town. I tell Melissa to take Kathy out to the field to collect nettles. It will cheer her up. Kathy grew up on a farm. She is not going for the nettles. Nettles?!?! Like, the weed? You eat those? I tell her the Farmer is obsessed with his book about how to forage for food. I do not tell her he is trying to teach himself to live off the weeds on his farm. I have empathy for Kathy. On my first date with the Farmer he served me dandelion leaves for salad. I thought he was too poor to buy real food, so I ate them all, to be respectful. I explain to Melissa that Kathy will not be consoled with nettles. They watch me cook. Kathy stresses about getting fired. Melissa stresses about Cullen, which is sort of like stressing about getting fired, especially if one considers that her primary job is to get married. I tell Kathy getting fired just means it was a bad match. Shell find something better to do. Although I am not sure what else there is to do in Darlington besides work on a farm or in the school. But there must be something. Or if there isnt, there must be a big grant for creating Internet startup jobs in rural towns. We eat rhubarb salad. Its not bad with canned mandarin oranges. Melissa tells stories of getting fired like Vietnam vets tell stories about Phnom Penh. Its a lot of death with a sort-of-inappropriately cavalier tone. Melissa tells Kathy to wait for the words, Youre fired. And then, no matter what words lead up to that phrase, say, Im sorry you feel that way. Thank you for everything youve done for me. Then Melissa tells Kathy to just be quiet. The silence will be unnerving to the person firing her. Melissa tells Kathy that also, sometimes you lose your hearing when youre fired. Its true. I cant believe Melissa remembers this detail. Ive been fired 20 times and I didnt remember. Then Melissa writes a script for how to act when youre fired for Kathy to memorize. If the first book we published hadnt gone missing, I would suggest to Melissa that she turn her advice into a book. We eat some leftover rhubarb pie for desert.

Fau Resume Writing

Fau Resume WritingThe difference between a well written fau resume and one that is short and lacking in substance is the fau resume writing. You have to have a large quantity of quality work experience on your resume to make up for the fact that you are no longer a college student. You are going to need to write the first sentence of your resume in a professional manner so that you are not turned off by the 'other' resumes that are looking for a job at your level. So how do you start off your resume? You need to make sure that you pick a particular area and begin with that. A resume can be divided into three main sections, which are the first section, the next section and the last section. The first section, being the address line, is usually longer than the rest because you need to tell the potential employer where you live.If you have a mailing address somewhere else, it will help if you are able to give it as your first name and the last name of the person who will be reading your resume. It is also important to include your contact number and e-mail address on the first line of your resume. Most of the prospective employers will want to call you directly for further details or for an interview. Therefore, when you state your name, your job status and the number of the contact person, it is best to put this information on the top line of your resume. The next line of your resume should tell your major objective in your current job. This is your objective statement, which should also tell about why you are interested in your current position. It may also be applicable to any future jobs you would like to apply for. For example, you can state that you would like to improve your career by focusing on marketing skills, management or working on the product side. The third section of your resume would normally be your skills section. This is another good time to highlight specific skills that you have. Write down all the skills that you possess. This is going to make your resume look more professional because you have listed them down in order of importance. You can also include things like your typing speed, grammar and spellings, etc.If you have been out of work for several years, you may have forgotten about some of the things that you knew previously in your previous job. Therefore, you may want to write down such skills. The same goes for people who have a resume that they have created from scratch. This is the type of resume that is great for someone who has been out of work for quite some time. One thing to note about resumes is that they should not be longer than two pages. This is the only time that you can keep it in the rule book. You can add a cover letter after the resume to tell the reader that you are interested in their position. You can even make sure that the cover letter is appropriate for the particular position you are applying for. Your resume is the first impression of you, so make sure that it is professional, informative and provides solid reasons for your interest in the position. If you know that you are going to be applying for a position at the national level, it is a good idea to hire an experienced fau resume writer. They will help you write the resume that will be effective and help you take the right steps to get the job that you really want.

Could You Make Your Clients Even More Loyal To Your Business

Could You Make Your Clients Even More Loyal To Your Business It’s always easier to try to get your current clients to keep on using your business rather than always being on the hunt for new ones. However, not many entrepreneurs are aware of that and they keep on trying to focus their marketing efforts on attracting new business. Do you think that it’s time you refocused your marketing efforts and instead look to increase the number of clients that you retain? Well, one way to do that is to give each of your clients a reason to be loyal to your brand. Here are some great tips that can help you improve your clients’ loyalty. Give Them Something For Nothing We all love to receive freebies, right? Well, lots of business owners have realized that giving small freebies away will reward your clients for their business and will make them a lot more likely to return to use your company in the future. There are plenty of great client gifts that you might want to consider, including the likes of custom air fresheners, T-shirts with your logo on, and branded refill coffee cups. I’m sure your client will really appreciate their free no matter what it is! Improve Your Company’s Customer Service If your client can’t fault your business’s customer service, then they will find it hard to think of a reason to jump ship and use one of your competitors. So, it’s a good idea to provide all of your customer service employees with plenty of training so that they can continually improve their skills. Ideally, you need to create a bespoke customer service for each individual client so that they feel like you are focusing all of your company’s attention on them. Remember They Are More Than A Paycheck You need to treat your clients very well. In order to do this, make sure that you are treating them more than just a paycheck. Sure, your company would struggle without the work provided by a client, but that shouldn’t be your own focus for helping them out. If it is, it could leave them feeling quite cold when they are engaging with your company, and they might be reluctant to return to you with more projects and contracts. So, be sure to always offer a personable service. Keep In Touch Sending out an email or quick note in a card to your client is a good way to keep in touch with them when you are in between projects. This will be a nice gesture to show that you haven’t forgotten about them. Plus, it might remind them to contact you about some new work that they have! Try To Get Feedback Once you’ve completed a project for a client, you should always ask them for feedback. If they have any areas where you could improve, make sure you work on them so that your quality of work is even better for them when they return. If you follow all of these handy tips above, your clients should become very loyal to you indeed!

Highly effective organization without management - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Highly effective organization without management - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog You MUST watch this speech by Jos de Block?from the 2015 Meaning Conference in Brighton. He explains how he founded an organization in Holland called Buurtzorg which delivers home care. Currently almost 10,000 employees?work in self-organizing teams?of up to 12 people. Each team has no manager all colleagues are?in charge of everything themselves, including hiring, training, work?scheduling, conflict management, etc. The result is that employees are incredibly happy at work because they can do work their way and arent burdened with huge amounts of overhead or bureaucracy. Clients are really happy, because they get incredibly good care from people who love what they do. This challenges all our preconceived notions of how large organizations should be run. Maybe the best boss, is no boss. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles.
